OCTOBER 5

ZAO Art Magazine

Special Issue, October 2026

Hello, dear reader!

In this special issue of ZAO, we present JOURNEY INTO NAMIB: Desert Photography Collection, a photographic journey by Italian artist and guest editor Vincenzo Cohen, exploring the extraordinary landscapes, fragile ecosystems, and wildlife of the Namib Desert.

Bringing together photographic works created between 2013 and 2024, this issue follows a visual journey through some of Namibia’s most remarkable environments. From the remote landscapes of the Skeleton Coast and the abandoned vehicles of Solitaire to the red dunes and ancient trees of Deadvlei, Cohen’s photographs reveal a landscape shaped by geological time, environmental change, and traces of human presence.

Across four interconnected photographic series—Imposing Wilderness, Metal Scrap, Valley of Death, and Desert Wildlife—the desert emerges not as an empty or lifeless space, but as a complex environment where beauty, memory, survival, and transformation coexist. Roads crossing vast wilderness, rusting vehicles slowly reclaimed by the landscape, and centuries-old trees standing against the dunes become quiet witnesses to the passage of time.

Beyond the visual experience, this collection reflects on biodiversity, climate resilience, desertification, and the relationship between human activity and the natural world. Through encounters with wildlife and landscapes of extraordinary stillness, the photographs invite us to reconsider how life adapts to extreme conditions—and how vulnerable these environments remain.

Perhaps the desert is not simply a place of absence, but a landscape filled with stories of endurance, change, and coexistence. Through photography, Journey into Namib encourages us to look more closely at what survives, what disappears, and what deserves to be preserved.

We hope this special issue offers a moment to reflect on the beauty and fragility of the natural world, and on our place within it.

Enjoy reading.
